Tour of Britain returns to Cockermouth in 2016

Stage Two will see the Tour of Britain return to Cumbria once again on Monday 5 September of the tour.

From Carlisle the riders will immediately head south to Penrith before turning west and tackling the hills of the Lake District, including Whinlatter Pass. The sternest of these tests is likely to come in Ambleside as the peloton take on the climb notoriously known as 'The Struggle' to cap a stage with 3,779m of climbing. The subsequent descent will take them down to Windermere before the run in to the finish at Kendal, with the 200m, 11% average climb of Beast Banks awaiting riders in the finale.

Six bike racks have been installed on Main Street, outside Bryson’s bakery and The New Bookshop, as part of a parnership between Allerdale council and the town council.
New maps are also being created, featuring hand-painted plans of the town centre.
The maps will appear on signage in nine locations across the town – in all six of Allerdale council’s car parks, and in three prominent wall-mounted spots.

Visitors will be able to buy printed versions of the maps for £1 from vending machines mounted on the signs, as well as from the tourist information centre.

he new maps are due to be installed before Christmas.
The funding for the two projects has been provided by Allerdale council which gives the borough’s seven towns £10,000 each to use for improvement projects.

This year, the large village of Seaton has been added to the list of towns which benefit from this funding.

Catherine Hetherington, owner of The New Bookshop, said: “We’re very pleased to see the new bike racks now installed outside our shop. They are being well used already and should prove a really useful addition to the bike riding experience in Cockermouth.”

Shoppers delight!

Cockermouth is, amongst many other things, a shoppers delight.  With a collection of shops, mainly independent, the time to explore is now.

With many of the shops in sale, some genuine bargains are around.  From pottery to clothing, the town boasts 'a department store' in a town.

This weekend will see the return of the farmers market with a small collection of specialist local producers on Market Place.  This alone is a good excuse to visit and with some final bargains to be had in the other shops, don't forget to enjoy a break in one of the town's coffee shops and cafes.

We look forward to welcoming you!
